2004-2009 Denmark Place
Written by Xander on August 12, 2020
Memories from our home in Denmark Place. Studio One and the library were in a room at Sonic Studios, and the office and Studio Two were upstairs in the attic room. Situated just off Tottenham Court Road, this was the ideal setting for TotalRock which was next to The Astoria, LA2, and The Borderline – which enabled every tour band playing to pay us a visit. On the border of Soho, the centre of London’s cultural scene, we also neighboured Sin nightclub, The Crobar and The Intrepid Fox when they moved out of Wardour Street, not to mention the plethora of guitar shops on Denmark Street (Tin pan alley) along with the 12 Bar! We also neighboured Earache Records London press office and Scream Promotions publicicity!
Alas, nothing lasts forever and a new underground train line (crossrail / Elizabeth line) to connect Heathrow airport in the west and ‘the city’ in the east ploughed through Soho, causing the destruction of many blocks with homes, businesses and livelihoods, along with it the grade II listed Astoria and the entire north side of the historical Denmark Street and Place, our happy home. We temporarily moved onto Denmark Street however this neither lasted long as it too was to become victim to the heartless gentrification (the clearing of culture and the essence of what makes an area trendy to be replaced by unaffordable accommodation and coffee chains) of Soho.

In actual fact Denmark Street is finally being rescued as a music district not as place for expensive apartments and coffee chains
