HENGE bring Cosmic Energy to Earth
During lockdown I came across this band on Facebook, and it was a case of ‘Are they actually a band or would that be too good to be true?’.. But they ARE a real band! They DO dress like this! And YES they are totally bonkers!
So what if it’s a gimmick. Some may say the music should be enough, but get off your pedestal and stop being so serious. But as an aside, yes the music still needs to hold up well. So what do we have here? I went to the show with not much of a preconception, which in those instances you need to be ready with an open mind – thankfully I’m not narrow minded and open to most music…
I think what’s best is to keep this simple: A space lord wizard and druid with two aliens, as bonkers as Oingo Boingo, the silliness of Sack Trick, with Frank Zappa scales and the happy hardcore of The Prodigy! The music is fun and danceable with a high energy beats, galactic melodies, groovy bass lines and out of this world vocals – I mean literally, voice modulations throughout representing different moods and even characters such as the King of Venus. Hosting a show at the Rescue Rooms is VERY hit or miss, I’ve seen international bands not even fill the ground floor, HENGE managed to pack out both floors – testament to their tribe of followers who not only sang only but danced all through the night until the very end.
Thoroughly enjoyable 5/5 family fun, absolutely worth seeing if you want to get away from real life, even if it’s just for one night. And yes, that is a plasma ball atop Zpor’s hat – it holds his memories!
