Alice Cooper Showcases His Stunning New Album, ‘The Revenge Of Alice Cooper’ at Union Chapel!

At the absolutely beautiful Union Chapel the day before the official release of Alice’s hotly anticipated new album ‘The Revenge Of Alice Cooper’, every pew was packed to bursting with excited fans and curious music journalists alike, the excitement level was up to the steeple for tonight not only were we to be treated to a rather special preview of the Master of Macabre’s stunning new album, ‘The Revenge Of Alice Cooper’ but also to a rather unique Q & A where his devoted fans had the chance to speak to not just the man himself, but also to the remaining members of the original Alice Cooper band with whom Alice has recorded his latest album! The evening, hosted by the one and only theatre legend Sir Tim Rice was a night the audience would never forget!  Never a man to rest on his laurels, we discovered that from the very first 70’s inspired venomous riff drenched note that Alice had created yet another shock rock musical masterpiece, and not a safe ballad filled radio friendly option that brings in the easy bucks either! Far from it, 51 years since the original line-up last recorded together, where they tore into the music scene with their Mary Whitehouse offending, teen rebellion inducing musical revolution and decapitating stage shows, setting a precedent that has reigned strong throughout the many years and reincarnations of the Alice Cooper band, their explosive latest offering is like taking a time machine straight back to those early restless days but better! The sound is crisper, the vibe has the swagger of Jagger, with the wah-wah guitars of sweat drenched gigs in CBGB’s,  it’s down and dirty, balls to the wall Alice Cooper! As Connor MacLeod said in Highlander, “There can be only one!” and whilst others have been inspired by the great man and tried to emulate his authentic sound, catchy lyrics and shock rock awe inspiring stage show, no one does it quite like Alice does! For this album, lead guitar duties were covered by Glen Buxton, Michael Bruce does a fine job on rhythm guitar and backing vocals, Dennie Dunaway mans the bass guitar and backing vocals and Neal Smith plays the drums! But as if this wasn’t enough, we are also treated to appearances on guitar from Gyasi Heus, Rick Tedesco and in ‘Black Mamba’, the brilliant Robbie Krieger!

The show took place the day before their exhilarating sell-out show with Judas Priest at the 02 which also happened to be the official release day and something (if tonight’s audience chatter was anything to go by) was rightly so, creating an awful lot of excitement!

The opening track ‘Black Mamba’, co-written by Bob Ezrin is pure 70’s garage rock, whereas ‘Wild Ones’ is all huge catchy chorus’s and massive riffs! The kind of song you could play all day long and never get bored of!! Written about the Marlon Brando film of the sane name, it’s punchy and surely a new Alice classic.

Part of the beauty of this album is the fact that it lacks the polished edge of some of Alice’s earlier albums like Trash, it has a fearless and gritty quality that just works! A sound that screams, this is me, take it or leave it!! And take it, I will!

‘Kill The Flies’ showcases a dark slightly demonic side, the Alice that we all know and love! Whilst it would be easy to talk about every track on the new album because they are all just so damn good, the night was so much more than just feel-good shock rock! But before we get to the other highlights of this incredible evening, I can’t possibly not mention the stunning ‘Inter Galactic Vagabond Blues’, with its bluesy harmonica and ‘See You on the Other Side’ which shows a softer side before opening up to big choruses, pounding drums and mesmerizing vocal harmonies! Another absolute stunner on this incredible album!

Whilst the delicious opportunity to listen to the new album had the crowd on cloud nine, the Q&A which followed was an Alice fans dream come true! Alice, Dennis, Neal, Michael and longtime producer and honorary sixth member Bob Ezrin spoke to Sir Tim Rice. It was like listening to the best music biography you’ve ever read. There were plenty of laugh out loud stories and a few heart-felt intimate moments too! The crowd were in hysterics as Alice told the story about how when they were recording Million Dollar Babies ‘. Keith Moon, Harry Nelson and Mark Bolan turned up at the studio drunk as skunks and everyone went to play an instrument they didn’t actually know how to play, and Alice joked about how despite being a pastors son, he could never imagine the day he’s actually be playing in a church! He then hinted that there may be another album in the pipeline which resulted in an explosion of applause.

When Alice spoke about the recent passing of Ozzy, he said that, “a giant bolder may have crashed, but rock’n’roll will roll on! A beautiful sentiment clearly shared by everyone here tonight!

So, in conclusion, Alice seems to have come back hotter and better than ever, refreshed and invigorated perhaps as a result of revisiting his musical roots and reconnecting with his old band! But whatever it is that drives this showman to keep creating music of this pedigree, I for one hope he never stops!
