Beyond Extinction ‘The Fatal Flaws of Humankind’ EP

29 January 2021 – Dead Species Records

Words: Mark Green
Death metal teen terrors Beyond Extinction are too young to be sounding like they’ve been doing this for years. These Essex blighters are here to kick some serious arse with their 2nd EP, ‘The Fatal Flaws of Humankind’, following on from their 2019 debut EP ‘Retribution’, when they must have had an average age of about 7. Hearing music like this from teens I should be teaching in school (yes, I’m a teacher), pleases me greatly and fills me with confidence about the future of the metal scene.

‘God Complex’ is angry from the get go and increases in intensity very quickly. The sound has a slight nu-metal edge to it, reminding me of Spineshank’s ‘Heights of Callousness’ (one of my first favourite albums as a teenager). ‘Apex Predator’ is venomous. Vocalist Jess Harmer sounds pissed off. The riffs aren’t complex and don’t need to be with a track like this. Guitars and drums are precise, and we get slower moments of downtuned guitars to close the track out. ‘Bones Like Branches’ is a brutal affair, with galloping breakdowns and another impressive vocal performance from Harmer. This is my highlight of the album. That’s not to say that closing tack ‘A Face Without Features’ is to be forgotten about. Probably the heaviest track on this EP, a fitting close to the proceedings.

For young lads who are creating music at this maturity, I’d love to see what’s to come in the future. A blistering 2nd EP release. Metal is in safe hands.
