Devin Townsend Announces Orchestral Metal Opus ‘The Moth’ — First Single ‘Enter The City’ Out Now
You could say life is a marathon, not a sprint. Quality has its price — and it also takes time. A motto that Devin Townsend’s upcoming album The Moth seems to live by. After all, the project has been over a decade in the making.
On 29 May 2026, the album will finally emerge from the cocoon that is InsideOutMusic. Until then, listeners can begin with the newly released single ‘Enter The City’, accompanied by its strikingly symbolic music video.

It’s a theme that demands depth. The Canadian metal maverick explains: “The Moth is about the journey — but it is also about arrival.” Few symbols speak more clearly of transformation than the moth itself: a craving for light mirroring the desire for enlightenment, metamorphosis as inner evolution, a step into the unknown.
That transformation is also how the project began. The 24-track work, described as a kind of life’s work, traces its origins back to an acoustic concert six years ago. Afterwards, the head of the North Netherlands Orchestra and Choir approached Townsend with an offer: to bring orchestral grandeur to his extensive discography — placing the orchestra where it thrives most, within a theatrical setting surrounded by choir and arrangement.
As Townsend explains, The Moth is
a loose story following someone who realises that old patterns of behaviour are no longer serving them. By digging in and sitting with themselves, an internal conflict is revealed — one they may have been resisting or unconsciously rationalising for years.
Deep perhaps — but, in a way, also simple. Townsend names the idea plainly: true self-acceptance. Something sturdier than slogans, closer to a practiced willingness to face what is uncomfortable without turning away.
As he explains further:
The most obvious metaphor for change within the concept of this project was a moth: from caterpillar to an entirely different creature — one so drawn to the light that it burns itself away. What remains is immutable — only the spirit.
The cycle of life, whether as moth or human. In the end, a cycle remains a cycle. And sometimes the only thing left to do is wait — for example, for the arrival of The Moth, out 29 May.
