‘Eye Am’ Surprised, Are You? – Type O Negative & Crowbar join forces

Written by on February 25, 2023

Type O Negative and Crowbar, the audience crowned kings of gothic and sludge death metal released a snippet of a statement on Facebook announcing their joint recording venture. Titled ‘Eye Am’, the band will include former Type O Negative members Kenny Hickey (vocals/guitar) and John Kelly (drums) along with Crowbar torch bearer Kirk Windstein (vocals/guitar) and Todd Strange (bass).

Since Type O Negative’s darkly beloved frontman Peter Steele passed back in 2007 the band have been gigging but this interesting combination might be the lovechild of 90s metal we’ve all been waiting for. While not much has been posted about the project yet it comes just a few weeks after TON released a ‘Love You To Death’ music video featuring footage of their 2007 Wacken festival appearance just months before Steele’s passing. That and the reissuing of their final studio album ‘Dead Again’ – to be released May this year – is definitely black tar laden food for thought.

At the Crowbar camp it’s founder and longest remaining member Windstein whose been keeping the riff-chugging cogs of his band turning. Turning out a total of twelve studio albums since 1990 they’re an untiring

presence on the metal circuit. Original band bassist Todd Strange briefly returned to the Crowbar line-up from 2016 to 2018 before departing once more from touring whilst remaining in his studio work.

As joint ventures go it’s the age old question of whether they will stick to their usual musical guns or head off in a completely different direction. With both bands inhibiting that rare, effortless capability of fusing metal, goth and rock we’ll have to see what long haired, dark eyed track they bring out.
