Fractal Generator – ‘Macrocosmos’
Everlasting Spew Records – 15 January 2021
Words: Mark Green
I had never heard of Canadian crushers Fractal Generator until now. Now, they are etched into the depths of my music riddled brain.
Following up from 2015’s stellar, but somewhat unknown, debut album ‘Apotheosythesis‘, the band have upped the ante and in the process taken us on the heaviest journey across space.
They bring a mix of old school death metal vibes, mixing the legendary hatred of Deicide and the riffs of Morbid Angel, with some of the technicality that we came to love Decapitated for. Throw in some sci-fi atmospherics and we’ve got metal from the far reaches of the universe. In writing, that sounds super bizarre, but it works. This isn’t a joke, this album will take your soul to the outer limits of the death metal galaxy.
We are greeted with a barrage of fast riffs from the title track. As the album continues on to the likes of ‘Serpentine‘, we are met with some superb hooks that will please any metal fan. Tempos shift at all the right times, letting us catch our wits before violently snatching them away again. ‘Contagion‘ is relentless throughout. We get one chance to breathe, before we are taken straight back into the mix of hell and alien invasion. Sound effects are subtly used on tracks like ‘Chaosphere‘ to aid the death growls we hear, giving them an uncomfortable, unnerving touch to keep us on our toes. ‘Shadows of Infinity‘ feels like a different beast of its own, changing between offbeat exchanges to straight forward full on headbanging. This is certainly a highlight for the album. As we shift through to the end of this listening odyssey, it seemingly gets heavier and angrier.
This is no nonsense death metal the way It should be, with that hint of sinister sci-fi uniqueness to it. Death metal for the heaviest aliens in the universe. They’re out there somewhere…
