LIVE REVIEW: CASSYETTE at The Deaf Institute, Manchester (22 February 2022)

Nu-metal, pop-punk princess Cassyette brings the Mayhem to a sold-out Manchester crowd

It had been around eight months since I last witnessed the euphoric ‘chaos’ that Cassyette so effortlessly brings to the stage. Download Pilot saw the Essex-born performer wow a 10,000 strong crowd in June 2021, but it’s during the Mayhem Tour that she currently embarks on alongside support acts Alienblaze and Bambie Thug that saw the talented singer/songwriter bring a killer live-set to her second sold-out audience on her first-ever headline tour. Get the lowdown of the night’s energy right here as Alex Alicia live reviews Cassyette at the Deaf Institute, Manchester.

To be among fellow music-lovers, watching an excitingly authentic and outrageous new rock artist attract a vibrant young scene of people was very special. And I felt entirely at home and completely privileged to have witnessed it in such close-knit proximity before this rising star further-begins to attract the well-deserved attention of even bigger audiences.

Rife with buzzing energy in a packed-out room pumped from watching two previous wild and fiery live performances, Cassyette took to the stage – which was dimly illuminated with seductive red lighting. She walked on sporting her merchandise (a baggy black tee featuring her namesake on the back), gothic choker and a wacky updo, complete with her now-iconic gem and rhinestone-infused smile, which she proceeded to showcase to the audience as she built anticipation by pacing left to right of the stage. The seemingly shy-yet completely loveable and charismatic charm of the singer saw her kick-off an explosive show with the introduction of her yet-to-be-officially-released song Like That, which encouraged the audience to erupt into a frenzy of jumping around, bouncing, and screaming. The fast-paced rock vibes had the Deaf Institute hooked from that very moment on.

The much-loved single, Dear Goth followed and received an almighty roar of excitement from the audience as the spoken intro filled the room which set the pace for the energy throughout the rest of the night. In a constant state of high spirits, the Deaf Institute welcomed a slight change of pace when Cassyette mixed things up with a prequel to Petrichor. A softer more isolated vocal version of the first verse and chorus saw her crouched down, seemingly baring her soul whilst singing meaningful and honest lyrics to a well-connected audience, before her raspy and powerful throaty vocals kicked in again over electronic beats and awesome riffage to really start the song! I was pleasantly surprised to hear a different rendition of the highly anticipated single, and I loved to witness that real honest moment of connect between musician and fan.

“F*ck it’s hot in here!” Cassyette exclaimed! Midway through the set, she opened up a mosh pit, circling her arms to signal the start of ‘slamdancing’, something every front-positioned audience member seemed more than happy to engage in! The energy was wild! Charming the crowd with metal screams, whispers and lively performances, the singer brought something for everyone! Whether that’s raging with her during the delivery of the fierce Prison Purse or connecting with her over her enthralling and heartfelt performance of the new single Mayhem, complete with glitter ball energy! Literally! Cassyette brings a level of commitment to her vocal and stage performances that for me, wonderfully channels some of the great pop/rock/punk icons like Pink! And Gaga!

One of the things I loved about the entire performance was Cassyette’s undeniable ability to give off a confident and attitudinal persona that deeply engages her audiences, whilst also showcasing a vulnerability and rawness through her songs that you see resonate with her fellow punk, goth, and alternative followers in real-time. And isn’t that what we all love about live music?! She left her sold-out crowd chanting for ‘one more song’ before re-emerging to reprise Dear Goth one final time.

Thirty minutes may seem short for a headline show, but what a jam-packed, adrenaline-fuelled, punk-inspired, joy ride of a thirty mins it was!

Cassyette takes on America next with her first-ever North American debut show at The Echo in Los Angeles this April, with the additional announcement today that she will also appear on the line-up for this year’s Slam Dunk Festival 2022!
