Star Circus announce new video and bassist

‘Just Like In A Movie’ video by STAR CIRCUS released today and Sophie Aurelia Young announced as the new bassist in the band.

Star Circus creator and ringmaster Dave Winkler had this to say…
Star Circus cover“It’s safe to say that ‘Just Like In a Movie’ spawned Star Circus rather than the other way round. It was a song I wrote a few years ago which I thought would be perfect for my band at the time, Bordello Rose, but for whatever reason it didn’t work out and the band itself fizzled not long after anyway. A couple of good friends really liked the song and suggested I should make my own album and stick it on there, and that’s really how the idea of Star Circus started.
If you’ve ever watched a really inspiring film and thought ‘I’m gonna wake up tomorrow and life’s gonna be totally different. I’m gonna appreciate every moment, take some huge chances, reach for the stars, love every person I meet…’. Then you actually wake up and life goes back to normal and do none of that, you can probably relate to this song.

There’s a positive sentiment that with a bit of a kick we can live like our heroes, but it’s grounded in very British sarcasm and apathy ‘On this fairground ride, where nothing changes and everybody’s fine/ Another day stuck inside, inside your movie…’

I wanted to do a video that focuses on the two main characters in the lyrics of the song, Cindy and Barbie. It’s quite unfashionable to be too literal in music videos, so I intentionally decided to challenge that and add a bit of comic relief in the process. Also I’d always wanted to have jive-dancing zombies, voodoo marionettes and general paranormal insanity!

This is very much a video of two halves, much like the Tarantino movie ‘Dusk Till Dawn’, and director Joe Lanigan really captured the madness in my head – some bits are scarily close to what I envisioned! I think we put together something we can both be proud of.

My girlfriend Sophie Aurelia Young did a great job behind the scenes with choreography, hair and makeup and making the marionette theater props too, that were a brilliant addition to the video. Sophie also plays piano and sings some backing vocals on many of the songs on the album and although my good friend Dom Myers Green had already recorded the bass on this track, this really felt like the right moment to make Sophie a part of the band as our bass player. She has been a driving force behind Star Circus, so it’s awesome to announce her as an official member. Star Circus is quite a fluid entity regarding roles. I play a lot of different instruments on the record, everybody sings, our drummer and keyboardist are guitarists and many friends are playing various things on the album. So Sophie’s primary instruments being piano & violin didn’t stop her from joining as our permanent bassist! I should mention I have nothing but love for Robin Thunders, who played four key electric and acoustic shows with us. He’s currently back in the Czech Republic with his family, largely due to the never ending Covid apocalypse, but we hope to see him back in the UK soon.

I’m really excited for everyone to see and hear ‘Just Like in a Movie’, we’ve had a great response already, and can’t wait to unleash the entire debut album into the world, and finally get out of our cages and play some shows! We’ll be at the Black Heart in London on July 10th for our Camden Rocks comeback gig and Sophie’s debut on bass, so I hope to see you all there!”
