SWEET CRISIS release DEBUT ALBUM – TRICKS ON MY MIND

Written by on August 13, 2021

Hailed as “the missing link between Free and The Black Keys”, SWEET CRISIS release their debut album TRICKS ON MY MIND on 20th August 2021 on Headline Records

Lead Single: Ain’t Got Soul (Radio Edit)

This is the sound of a modern British Rock band whose roots and music run deep. Vocalist Leo Robarts says: “It’s been a long, interesting and often messy journey but the most important thing we’ve arrived!! This is the album Piers and I have always wanted to make a somewhat paradoxically sounding -modern, classic Rock album, and by that I mean taking the values and soul behind the old 70s rock songs and putting a modern twist and production to it. I loved the way FREE could incorporate any genre into their music, and in someway we’re carrying on that grand, sacred tradition”

Drop the needle anywhere on Tricks On My Mind’ and you’ll hear tons of guitar riffs, solos, Hammond keys, heavy drums and some of the best vocals that British Rock has heard for a very long time.

“…brilliantly constructed tunes tugging at the soul of Free and the widescreen imperial strut of Zep. It’s a joy to hear.”

Album: Tricks On My Mind

SWEET CRISIS are Leo Robarts (vocals), Piers Mortimer (guitar), Dom Briggs-Fish (keyboards), Matt Duduryn (bass) and Joe Taylor (drums), and the album features guest appearances by Don Airey (Deep Purple, Thin Lizzy & Rainbow) and Sarah Brown (Pink Floyd, Simple Minds & Bryan Ferry).

The album’s title track was written on tour, and has all the energy this suggests. “It’s the catchiest, upbeat song on the album,” Leo says. “And we recorded it live. Just banged it out in three takes.” In contrast, one of the more reflective songs, ‘Ain’t Got Soul’ has a richer texture – what Piers calls “a mix of Peter Green-style guitar and orchestral stuff ”.
And in another, more leftfield track, ‘Love Me Like Sugar’ there is, as Piers puts it, “a Steely Dan vibe”.

Tricks On My Mind is available on 180g coloured vinyl, CD and download. Pre-order it on CD or Vinyl here  or by download from here.

Journey to the Album & Inspiration

Leo says: “so Piers and I are at a Queen gig at Hyde Park We would have been around 16 at the time, and just starting our musical Journey. Paul Rodgers is singing and he’s my ultimate singing idol. We managed to bribe a security guard and sneak backstage, we then managed to talk our way into Paul’s trailer, and it wasn’t what you would have expected. There was a kettle and 3 tables full of Teabags and that’s it! All the Tea you could ever think of! Tea’s for months! Insane… Anyway, Paul comes in and asks if I’d like a mug of tea! I was like, ‘sure!? we start to chat and end up singing together ‘Heavy Load’ by FREE, mug of tea!!

I mean come on! Paul says ‘nice voice mate’ and I reply, ‘you’re not too bad yourself mate!’… That kind of experience really helped me believe in myself and my music. FREE still is one of my favourite bands of all time. When I’m behind that mic, and channel a bit of Paul, it always feels good!

Guitarist Piers Mortimer comments: ‘It’s been a long time coming! Leo and I have been playing music together since we were at school and never been able to release an album. Came close lots of times, so Tricks On My Mind is extremely special and important to us. Kinda like our first born! ‘Much of this album is music we’ve come up with in the last few years – new band, new songs, but I think you can also hear all the years of musical experiences we’ve gained in these songs.

There’s been many ups and downs on this journey. One low that turned into a high, is when I met Robert Plant in a dingy London pub after playing to a handful of fans and a dog. I was stood at the urinal thinking ‘what the fuck am I doing this for’when a voice said ‘that was an amazing gig, I really enjoyed that.’I said thanks and looked up to see who I was chatting with – Robert Plant. You can always question is this any good and ‘does anyone like it?’But when you have greatest fucking Rock star ever saying that, it definitely gives you the courage and motivation to keep on slogging it out!’
