The Soap Girls, A Void, No Content, Nambucca, 2019

No Content are just two guys a vocalist/guitarist and a drummer. Dressed in shell suits and trainers they are very noisy. There’s a lot of Nirvana style riffs and screaming and no guitar solos, so its pretty 90s. The piercing vocal is somewhat alternative, halfway to falsetto glam rock, but more disturbing. I thought it sounded something like if Zed from Police Academy decided to have a go at fronting a rock band. In short I enjoyed it, but for someone coming from the glam sleaze rock tradition the stage presence could have more to it.

A Void were sort of the opposite, compulsive viewing of a little girl in a party dress with copious amounts of pubic hair under her arms and elsewhere giving everyone an eyeful and a kind of energetic Nirvana style bassist, but really not much music to speak of, not boring, but could get old once the novelty wears off.

So it was nice to get to the Soap Girls who have both the music and the stage show to offer. It was a sad day for the girls as one of their friends in South Africa had been murdered for a lap top and a mobile phone, but despite wearing their hearts on their sleeves they threw themselves into the show and delivered the goods.

It was a super heavy and long set with a lot of material from the new album ‘Elephant in the Room’. I have liked the band more as they have become more metal and they are now a cross between Courtney Love, L7 and Metallica, which sure isn’t a bad thing in my eyes. Such firepower from a threesome is somewhat surprising. Anyone attending the Soap Girls show for the nudity could get a rude awakening if they are expecting a couple of submissive ladies easy to exploit. That is not where these girls are coming from at all. If it is pussy it is definitely rioting, so be prepared for that. Men taking the stage to also dance in their underwear are told ‘Don’t Get in My Way. I’ll Break Your Leg’. It is a highly energetic performance with some of the stage antics being close to gymnastics as the photographs show. And it was very very LOUD. I missed my last train as the gig went on late, however, it was definitely worth it. Ladies who bring it, the Soap Girls are the very definition.
