This House We Built – In their own words

Written by on October 22, 2025

‘This House We Built’ interviewed by Dunk McKellar

Hi. Can you tell us your name, what you do in the band?
Scott Wardell and I’m the Singer & Guitarist in the band ‘This House We Built’. I also try and herd cats and make a fine pot of tea!

Is there a story behind your band name?
The band name came out of sheer frustration on trying to find a band name, we had a couple of weeks getting ideas, then having a look on spotify to see if anyone else was called that, and yes all the names we thought of were taken already. Pointless having the same name as someone else or another 10 bands so eventually after kicking loads of names about our drummer at the time Oz, said ‘This House We Built’ we all went silent and then said yep! I think we’re the only one (hopefully)

What region/country are you from and how is the rock/metal scene there?
We’re from Scarbados (Scarborough) UK, I personally live in a little town called Pickering just down the road from Scarborough, and there’s more bands in this little town than alot of places, buzzing with music.

What is your latest release? (Album/EP/Single)
We’ve just nicely released a single called “Broken Dreams’ and we’ve our 4th single release on the 21st November along with our second album.

Who have been your greatest influences?
I would probably say King’s X, Tyketto, Little Angels, Sting, Dixie Chicks & Pantera, too many influences haha!

If you could collaborate on a song with any current band or musician who would it be?
I would Say Rhianna from Kira Mac, we’ve talked about this so watch this space folks 😉

What’s the best gig that you have played so far?
I think ‘Maid of Stone’ Kent has been our biggest and best one to date, playing on the same bill as Ugly Kid Joe and Black Stone Cherry was a definite ‘pinch myself’ moment.

If you could play any festival in the world, which would you choose and why? (Of course, it’s Winterstorm haha!)
Haha! yes of course Winterstorm! I’ve always wanted to play at ‘The Monsters of Rock, Castle Donnington’. It’s changed alot since those days but would love to play Download festival, that would be a real Bucket list one for me personally. I’ve dreamed about playing on the main stage a number of times, that coming true would be something else!

OK, budget is limitless, what’s the top three on your rider?
Ohhh it would have to be a mobile fish n’ chip shop following us round to every gig, so we feel at home.

Who would you choose if you could resurrect ONE rock star?
It would have to be Dimebag Darrel. I met the guy a good few years back and he was the loveliest fella you could meet, what a dude!

If you could change one thing about the music industry currently, what would it be?
It would be that musicians made fair money for what they are doing. Far too many incredible bands out there still scratching a living – most of us have to have a job during the day as you simply cannot survive otherwise, The streaming music thing is fantastic to get your music out there but four of you cannot make a living getting about £30 a month royalties haha.

Do you have an all-time, ultimate favourite album?
I think ‘Don’t Come Easy’ by Tyketto has to be the one – Killer no Filler that one. I hear the lads have a new album coming out next year so cannot wait to hear that.

You’re in a bar fight, you can only choose three rock stars as back up, who’s in your corner?
Mmm… right Zakk Wylde, Henry Rollins and Phil Anselmo (maybe go back 25 years though)

What’s next for the band?
We’ve plenty of ‘happenings’ going on next year, we’re on tour with ‘Glamour of the Kill’ in March, and after this a good few dates to be announced followed by our own UK tour late summer. We just want to get this new album out there and spread it far and wide, we love doing what we do, meeting new people and saying elo’ to the fans who we’ve gathered up along the journey.

If you had one message for your fans, what would it be?
Thank you soo much for putting up with us haha! keep listening, coming to the gigs and being a family to ’This House We Built’, we love you all x
