Written by Malcolm Dome on October 19, 2018
Thunder are to put out a new studio album and also tour early next year.
The album is titled ‘Please Remain Seated’ and is released by BMG on January 18. It features what are described as radical reworkings of songs from their back catalogue. This will be available various formats: single CD, double CD with bonus tracks, 180g black vinyl, double vinyl with a gatefold sleeve, limited edition transparent orange vinyl, limited edition transparent orange, white and black splatter double vinyl (there will be only 1000 copies) and digital. The first single, ‘She’s So Fine’, is available now. Check it out here:
Says frontman Danny Bowes: “We’ve never been the kind of band that wanted to make the same album over and over, and we’ve never been scared to try new things. In fact, making Thunder music over the past 30 years has taught us that the more we challenge ourselves, the better we get. Having re-imagined and re-recorded ‘Love Walked In’ in 2017, we were very stimulated by the process, and wanted to try it on other songs. We made it as live as possible, jamming ideas until we found an arrangement that felt good. We set ourselves three rules: work fast, don’t aim for perfection, and make it different to the original. Some songs fell together spontaneously, and some took a series of strange left turns before ending up in a place none of us predicted.
“By shaking up old tunes in this way, we forced ourselves to rethink how we felt about them. We think it’ll probably be the same for fans when they hear them. It’s not supposed to be a ‘Best Of’, and it’s not a change of direction, it’s just another brief stop along the journey to where we’re heading (wherever that is). We really like it, and we hope others will too.”
The band will be touring the UK in February, with Dan Reed supporting. The dates are Cardiff St. David’s Hall February 1, Ipswich Regent 2, Manchester Bridgewater Hall 4, York Barbican 5, Gateshead Sage 6, Glasgow Royal Concert Hall 8, Leicester De Montfort Hall 9, Bath Forum 11, Birmingham Symphony Hall 12. Tickets go on sale from 9am on October 26. VIP packages will be available from October 23 through the band’s website, www.thunderonline.com
