Admiral Sir Cloudesley Shovell – Band of the Month November 2020

Written by on November 4, 2020

It was a close call between the three finalists this month, but we are chuffed to announce that Admiral Sir Cloudesley Shovell are our Band of the Month for November 2020.

Admiral Sir Cloudesley Shovell

Album: ‘Very Uncertain Times’
Release: October 2019
Style: Inept Early Heavy Metal and Grease Rock
RIYL: Dust, Buffalo, Sir Lord Baltimore, Bang, Hard Stuff, Groundhogs and Soggy.
Location: East Sussex and London

Based in the picturesque fishing town of Hastings (“a drinking town with a fishing problem”) on the sleepy South Coast of England, old school good-times rockers Admiral Sir Cloudesley Shovell have ripped into the hearts, skulls and nightmares of the heavy rock populous since their inception way back in 2006. Initially starting life as a hard-rock covers band, the Shovell rapidly replaced the incessant riffing of numerous golden-age hits (and misses) with their own tunes, heavily influenced by whatever was on the turntable at the time (Bang, Buffalo, Groundhogs, Sir Lord Baltimore, Crushed Butler and Hard Stuff provide a brief insight of what to expect).

When we recorded ‘Very Uncertain Times’ we had no fucking idea just how prophetic that title would become. The concept was simple really, write a bunch of nifty riffs and go into the studio (with Harvey Summers at Broadoak, Bexhill-on-Sea for the third consecutive time) and bang the album out in a week.

THE RUNNERS-UP

1000mods1000mods albums cover

Album: ‘Youth Of Dissent’
Release: 24 April 2020
Style: Doom, psychedelic, stoner rock
RIYL/FFO: Greenleaf, Stoned Jesus, Truckfighters
Location: Greece

Having risen from smokey basements to packed arenas, children of the now-legendary Greek underground heavy rock scene of the mid-00s, 1000mods can be considered no less than the most successful Greek rock band of the past decade.

Deriving equally from the 70s (not only songwriting-wise but also due to their love for vintage equipment and analogue sound) and the glorious 90s, they never hesitated to blend all their influences (from retro-rock and doom rock, to fuzzy heavy rock and space rock, even the grunge and alternative scene) creating a unique recipe of explosive heavy music that’s impossible to imitate.

Heavier than life, psychedelic, trippy, hauntingly melodic and dangerously addictive, 1000mods will surely groove your body, take violently your mind off things and occasionally give you chills down your spine.
